The 5 Lab Tests Your OB Probably Didn’t Order (But Should Have)

If you’re navigating the fertility journey and you’ve ever been told, “Everything looks normal — just keep trying,” while feeling deep down that something is being missed — this is for you.

So many women and couples today are falling through the cracks of traditional fertility care.
Important root causes are being overlooked simply because the right tests weren’t ordered.

But the good news?
God designed your body to give you signals.
And when we take the time to listen carefully — through the right lab work — we can uncover imbalances that are very often completely fixable.

Here are 5 critical lab tests that most OBs don’t order routinely — but absolutely should if you’re trying to conceive:

1. GI-MAP (Functional Stool Test)

Your gut is foundational to your overall health—and your fertility.
Research has shown that gut infections like H. pylori can cause chronic inflammation and disrupt the immune system, creating a hostile environment for conception and implantation.

A GI-MAP stool test can uncover hidden infections, bacterial overgrowths, yeast, parasites, and even how well you’re digesting and absorbing nutrients (key for healthy eggs, sperm, and hormone production).

🌱 Fun fact: Around 70% of your immune system is housed in your gut! Healing your gut often leads to healing other areas you didn’t even know were struggling.

2. Full Thyroid Panel (Including Antibodies)

Most conventional doctors only test TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone)—and if it falls into a very wide “normal” range, they consider thyroid function just fine.

But research tells us otherwise:
Elevated thyroid antibodies (TPO or TG antibodies) are linked to a higher risk of infertility, miscarriage, and poor pregnancy outcomes—even when TSH looks normal.

A full thyroid panel should include:

  • TSH

  • Free T3

  • Free T4

  • Reverse T3

  • TPO antibodies

  • TG antibodies

Your thyroid is like the spark plug for your entire reproductive system. God designed it to work in perfect harmony with your ovaries, uterus, and hormonal rhythms. When thyroid function is even slightly off, fertility can be impacted.

3. Fasting Insulin

Most doctors check fasting glucose (blood sugar), but few check fasting insulin.
The problem? Insulin resistance often starts long before glucose becomes abnormal.

High fasting insulin can:

  • Disrupt ovulation

  • Lower egg quality

  • Increase miscarriage risk

  • Lead to PCOS-like symptoms even without classic PCOS

Studies show that women with higher insulin levels have longer times to conception and lower pregnancy rates—even if they are not overweight. Checking insulin early allows us to intervene before it derails your fertility.

4. hs-CRP (High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein)

hs-CRP is a marker of systemic inflammation — and elevated levels have been strongly associated with infertility, poor egg quality, and lower success rates even with IVF.

Chronic inflammation can quietly disrupt ovulation, impair embryo implantation, and interfere with hormonal signaling.
By identifying and reducing inflammation, we align more closely with the way God designed the body to conceive—restoring peace to the process.

5. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is often underestimated, but it’s crucial for fertility.
Vitamin D receptors are found on the ovaries, uterus, and placenta.

Low vitamin D has been linked to:

  • Longer times to conceive

  • Higher miscarriage rates

  • Poor egg and embryo quality

Aiming for optimal—not just “normal”—vitamin D levels can significantly support your fertility journey. (Ideally, blood levels should be between 50-70 ng/mL for fertility health.)

Simple bloodwork + proper supplementation = a massive impact on your path to parenthood!

A True Story of Hope:

One of our dear clients, E, had spent years chasing answers.
Doctor after doctor told her, “You’re fine. Just keep trying.”
She had endured multiple failed IVF cycles and felt completely lost.

When she came to us, we ran deeper testing—GI MAP, full thyroid panel, fasting insulin, hs-CRP, vitamin D—and everything changed.
We found:

  • Insulin resistance

  • Very elevated hs-CRP levels

  • High TPO antibodies

  • Significant gut dysbiosis

It was both a relief and a heartbreak—relief to finally have real answers, but frustration that it had been missed for so many years.

Healing hasn’t been an overnight fix.
But through targeted support, nutrition, supplements, prayer, and trust in God's timing, E has made incredible progress.
Her body is healing, her cycle is thriving again, and we are faithfully praying that her miracle is on the way soon. 🙏
